Deadline extended

It’s something that already the talk of the town, but just how does the 2007-08 Crimson Tide boys’ basketball team that won 26 of its 31 games compare to some of the other great teams in school history?

That’s where you the reader and basketball fan come into play. We want to hear the thoughts of the basketball fans and others, who have followed the program for decades. Is this team as good as the best team ever to play at Columbia? As good as the team that won the state title back in 1987? As good as the team that won a district title in 1994? Or, as good as the team that lost to Wampum in 1958?

This year’s team won the school’s first section basketball title in 14 years; made it to the semi-finals of the L-L League playoffs; won 20 straight games and also qualified for the district and state playoffs.

We also want to hear your thoughts on the season. Any special moments the fans might have.

Was it the night that Adam Pittman and Mike Seibert both went over the 1,000 point mark in the same game? Was it beating Lancaster Catholic for the section title?

We will be seeking your input and will publish your answers in the April 10 edition of the Columbia Ledger.

One is by email, by sending your thoughts to columbialedger@embarqmail.com; by letter, sending the information to 262 Locust St., or via the Tide Talk blog, which can be reached at www.chronicleledgernewsgroup.com.

12 out of 16

Day One of March Madness is in the books. Went 12-4 on Day One.

Could have been worse, had I not changed Oral Roberts and Pitt.

Lost two 8-9 games, which I think are the toughest to pick. Had BYU beating Texas A&M and Kent State beating UNLV.

Biggest loss was USC falling to K-State. Had USC going to the Elite 8.

Also lost Purdue and Baylor. About the only Big 10 team I usually pick is Michigan State. Forgot Gene Keady isn't at Purdue anymore.

Couple of worries for today's game -- two more 8-9 games -- Picked Indiana over Arkansas and Mississippi State over Oregon. Also Gonzaga and Davidson. Also picked St. Mary's over the U.

Other piks: Memphis over Texas-Arlington; Texas over Austin Peay (who might have the best chant of the tournament); Drake over Western Kentucky; UConn over San Diego; Georgetown over UMBC; Vandy over Siena; Clemson over 'Nova; Tennessee over American; Butler over South Alabama; Louisville over Boise State; Oklahoma over St. Joe's and the Heels over the Mount.

Wow

Last night was definitely one of those nights when I got home, that was like WOW!

Wow because after sitting down to watch some college hoops, I was stunned to read on the bottom line that Bob or Bobby Knight had stepped down as coach at Texas Tech.

Had to wonder, before seeing most of the Sports Center special, if Knight had hit a player or did something stupid and was going to get fired. After listening to the experts, it just seemed like it was time. An odd time at that.

Despite his short comings off the court, Knight was an excellent X and O coach. Maybe he can move to New York and help struggling Hooiser alum Isiah Thomas with the Knicks.

I remember when he was at Indiana and went to a game at Penn State right after the Jordan Center openeed and listening to one of his press confernces. It definitely wasn't g-rated.

This could be a big week for big time coaching changes. Rumor has it there is another one in the works and it could be a factor in football recruiting.
